Smoke-Free Living for African Americans (SLAA) project was launched by the California Black Health Network in 2005. This project, funded by tobacco litigation settlement funds from Sacramento County, was developed to fulfill two primary goals:
- To reduce secondhand smoke in the cars and homes of African Americans.
- To provide services and support resources to help African American smokers in Sacramento County stop smoking.
The target audience of the SLAA project is African Americans living in Sacramento County. The Secondhand Smoke social marketing campaign will address African Americans living in the Oak Park and Meadowview areas. Stop smoking classes are open to all Sacramento county residents.
As of April 12, 2007, there are two stop smoking classes in progress, one in the Del Paso Heights area and one in the Oak Park area. The first class, held in the Meadowview area, ended on February 22, 2007. Four participants successfully completed the class.
Three of four focus groups have been held to gather information about African American smoking behaviors and patterns. This information, as well as that from a secondhand smoke survey, will be used to identify a target audience and the most effective messages to bring about a reduction of secondhand smoke in the cars and homes of African Americans. The final focus group will be held on Saturday, April 14 th , 2007.
124 Secondhand Smoke surveys were collected and then submitted for analysis to the project's evaluator. The most striking finding was that although many African Americans are smoking outside of the home, 51% of those surveyed smoke outside while children are present.
All findings will be submitted to the SLAA Advisory Committee at the upcoming meeting on May 8, 2007. It is the charge of the Advisory Committee and the Project Coordinator to develop the Secondhand Smoke social marketing campaign.
