CBHN and the AATEP staff have truly enjoyed working with you all.  It is only from your support that we were able to be successful meeting our goals and objectives.  As the fight continues, our spirit will continue to support you as we fight big tobacco for the benefit of our communities.

Good bye, good luck and GOD bless!

The African American Tobacco Education Partnership (AATEP) was funded through the Tobacco Control Section (TCS) of the California Department of Health Services.  Administered by the California Black Health Network, AATEP is a statewide technical assistance, training and advocacy project that builds capacity of TCS-funded projects.

Mission Statement

The mission of the African American Tobacco Education Partnership (AATEP) is to engage communities of color throughout California in campaigns that reduce the use of tobacco products by people of African descent.  AATEP has made a commitment to the following goals in an effort to achieve this mission:
  • Increase awareness of the disproportionately adverse health effects of tobacco use among people of African descent.
  • Increase the effectiveness of tobacco control programs targeting people of African descent.
  • Increase participation by community-based organizations, businesses and individuals in campaigns to reduce tobacco use among people of African descent.
  • Enhance leadership, develop key leaders and mobilize communities to reduce tobacco use.
  • Provide technical assistance & training through workshops, seminars and teleconferences.
  • Provide sponsorship for tobacco control policy adoption in the AA/AI community.
  • Develop or review educational & media materials.
  • Assist smokers in quitting and eliminate reliance of tobacco industry sponsorship and funding.

The AATEP Advisory Committee

The African American Tobacco Education Partnership maintains an Advisory Committee (AC) of five to eight members. These members are from throughout California and are experts in tobacco control for African Americans and African Immigrants (AA/AI). Committee members understand community-organizing principles, hold leadership roles in his or her community, and collaborate with local lead agencies (city or county health departments).

The AC assists the Partnership with developing the media plan, acts as media spokesperson, reviews educational materials, participates in Information & Education visits to the California legislature, participates in strategic planning, and provides guidance and makes recommendations on tobacco related issues in the AA/AI community.
